While Super Nintendo game cartridges are far less likely to cause you trouble than NES carts, over time they can build up dust and corrosion on their contacts which makes them hard to get working. Cleaning them is very simple and an easy way to keep your SNES collection in top condition.
Required Tools
- 3.8mm Security Bit + Screwdriver (View Picture)
- Metal Polish or Rubbing Alchohol
- Dry Cloth
You can find metal polish at WalMart or any department store in the cleaning detergent section.
Opening the SNES Cart
Using the 3.8mm security bit, undo the 2 screws located on the bottom of the top side of the SNES cartridge.
The top is held down by two tabs, so once you have the two bottom screws out, you can remove the top cart cover. With the top off, simply remove the PCB board from the cartridge case.
Cleaning The Contacts
With the PCB is out, its time to clean up the contacts. This is the part of the game cartridge that connects to your SNES console and is often covered in dust, dirt or corrosion, making your games hard to play. The red area shows you which part to focus on.
Apply the metal polish on a dry cloth and rub on contacts. Let it dry to a white paste and then buff it off with the dry cloth. Your contacts should then be smooth and shiny. Flip the PCB over and do the other side too!
Reverse the order for assembly. Pop it in your SNES and your game should play like new!
